Here's a picture from my first ever bike ride to White Sands and back. It was a great 60+ mile round-trip bike ride. (Oh, I added a few miles at the end)

Sure enough, as soon as I crossed from asphalt to the hard packed sand, I almost skidded out like the sand was snow. It's quite a bit more slippery than a normal snow surface.

After the initial slip sliding scare, I rode around the whole loop which included a pass through the picnic area where these little benches are located. While the wind was calm on this particular day, I'm sure the little windbreaks these provide are quite appreciated by visiting picnickers.

This ride was a most excellent way to start my little vacation back in Alamogordo.
