I have no idea why some things work the way they do. One thing I've tried to explore but have never been able to resolve is how does the eye, the subconscious eye see the image before your mind consciously sees it?
What happens is I'd be driving down the road looking at the world unfold in front of me when something catches my eye. What it is is something that makes my brain go "there's something there, stop." I don't really know what caught my eye. I just know there's something there. What I found is if I stop lots of time I can't find what caught my eye. But, a lot of times I find what's there and am able to capture it. Sometimes what I see is really subtle like yesterday's blog post. Other times it's really obvious like this image; the colors.
In this case I was driving along the road and saw the hill. The color was obvious. That made me stop and turn around. Unlike other times, the discovery process for figuring out how to capture what caught my eye--i.e. the color--was really simple. Since the hill was a quarter mile away it was obvious I needed to use a long lens to only capture the color. Anything else would've included things that didn't contribute to what I wanted to capture here--i.e. non-colorful things. I just pulled out my camera and loaded up my long zoom lens--i.e. the 80-400mm AF-S. I shot a couple of horizontal then vertical oriented images. Then, called it good. It was a pretty simple capture, very obvious.
As obvious as this discovery was, I still don't know the true mechanics of how my mind's eye sees what it sees. That's okay. I'll keep trying to figure it out.
Cheers
Tom
