Fall Snow Squall - Tehachapi Mountains, Tehachapi, California
__________
We just had our first major winter storm of the year. The end of last week included mountains of rain down in the Antelope Basin. When there's rain in the desert, that means there will be snow in the mountains. Sure enough, I have evidence.
Living now in Tehachapi is a bit unique and unexpected. Unlike what I was thinking, there's a very diverse weather environment here. I thought it would be much like Alamogordo is since both places are at the same elevation, 4000 ft. Nope, I couldn't be more wrong.
Since I've been here at the end of a August, temps have ranged from the hundreds to the upper 20's. I'm not even into winter yet we have snow on the ground. Even more interesting is while the weather might be terrible down in the basin, it just is likely to be nice up in the mountains which amazes me.
The image here was shot using my iPhone and the Hipstagram app. The app doesn't accent the images that much. It does a good job cropping and framing to really focus the viewer's attention of what you're shooting.
One issue with the iPhone is its dynamic range. Unless you get the exposure right, it's really easy to blow out the highlights meaning things like the clouds would be empty white blobs instead of clouds as you see here.
Here's hoping to see more winter storms this year. It'll be exciting if there is.
Cheers
Tom
